This clip of Wreck It Ralph holds
some elements of Post Modernism in it. Firstly, Felix wins a medal in his game as
he is the 'good guy', so Ralph decides that he also wants to win one to prove
that he can be a good guy too, so he is going against the structure of the bad
guys being only bad, and stepping outside of this boundary as he wants to be
different. This breaks the structure of a modern text as there has always been
a line between the good and bad characters in films.
A traditional value is where he
goes back to his game, where the rest of the characters are having a party
without him, which is a stereotypical value for the bad guy to be discluded and
neglected from everyone else. He feels sad and lonely so wants to be good
instead of staying bad which is unconventional.
The Pac Man game where they held
their meeting is normal life for them, inside a game, however we see it as a simulated.
They walk out of the game and return to ‘reality’ but the audience still this
as simulated as they are still game characters, but its real for them when they
step outside a game. Intertextual references are included in this clip when all
of the bad characters from each game are meeting together inside one game,
which is blurring the boundaries of all the different genres of the games
together. Also, Ralph takes an 8 bit cherry out of the Pac Man game, and it
turns to ‘real life’ once it has been brought out of the game, but this is
still animated for us. This also creates a nostalgic feel for the audience as
they recognize this as one of the games main features.
Another traditional value is where
everyone runs away from him in the ‘Game Central Station’ as he is bad and no
body likes him. However even though he is, he breaks and goes against this
convention when he gives Q bert (a character from an unplugged game) the cherry
he just obtained,so he is breaking the trait of being bad and doing something
nice for someone else. This is also taking the cherry feature from the Pac Man
game and blurring it with another game which had been unplugged, like it is
giving something away.
